She is all of 13. But Esha Singh, a resident of Marredpally in Secunderabad, showed immense maturity and perseverance to shoot her second successive gold at the 12th Asia Air Gun championship in Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei.
After winning the mixed team event gold with Vijayveer Sidhu on Wednesday, the Hyderabad sensation shot yet another gold when she triumphed in the junior 10-m Air Pistol event. Esha shot 240.1 points beating the challenges of Yun Seonjeong of Korea (235 points) and Chen Yu-Ju of Taipei (214.6 points) on her way to the gold.
“It is a dream come true. It is always a great feeling when you win a medal for your country,’’ Esha said from Taoyuan.
A product of Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation (GNSPF)’s Gun For Glory, she also clinched a team silver medal in the same event. “I was in good touch. When I won the first gold in the mixed team event, I was confident of winning this gold medal today. I said to myself that I can do it,’’ she said.
The young shooter said she never lost focus at any stage of the event. “I was very focused and had consistent scores. In the end, I won with a comfortable margin.”
Esha shot into prominence
Esha shot into prominence during the National championship in Thiruvananthapuram when she upstaged the likes of Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu to win the gold in the women’s air-pistol event. “My confidence is high since the November Nationals. I believe in myself that I can do it. These wins help me build my career.”
A student of Bolton School, Esha puts in hard work as she practises for a little over six hours every day. “I start the day with a good session of yoga and the rest of the day I’m totally into practice sessions.”
Esha, who idolises Narang, credited her stupendous progress to the London Olympic bronze medallist and coach Pavan. “They played a huge role in making me a good shooter. I owe my rise and good performance to these two people.”
Narang was all excited with the performances of the city shooter. “She is an excellent talent. She is a very dedicated shooter. It is a very good beginning,” he said. Father Sachin Singh, who built an air-pistol shooting range for her daughter at his Marredpally residence, felt that Esha has a wonderful attitude to excel in big events.
“She is very cool. She is passionate and never shows nervousness in tight situations,” said Singh, who is a businessman in sports merchandise.
