Hyderabad-based ham enters Limca Book of Records

Jacob received certificates of reception from most number of radio stations and for this achievement he found a place in the records.

Do you know that you can write a letter to any radio station of All India Radio (AIR) after tuning-in to a program broadcasted in that particular station? Also, do you know that the station might just reply to you confirming the receipt of your letter? Yes, exactly for this unique hobby, which is called as BCDXing or Broadcast DXing, Jose Jacob, a city-based amateur radio operator has entered the Limca Book of Records.

Jacob received certificates of reception from most number of radio stations and for this achievement he found a place in the records. “I received certificates of reception from 132 different stations of All India Radio,” said this ham who goes with a call-sign VU2JOS.

About Jose Jacob

From his childhood, Jacob was interested to listen to various radio stations and write a report to them with details of the program that he listened. In 1976, at the age of 17, he received his first certificate of reception. From then, in a period of 42 years, he collected 132 such responses from all the AIR stations ranging from short-wave to medium-wave to FM.

“My interest was on Indian stations and I started sending reports through inland letters, white paper, and later on e-mail,” says this 60-year-old.

Jacob who is currently working as assistant director at the National Institute of Amateur Radio in Hyderabad, was born in Kerala, later stayed for some days in Pune before settling in Hyderabad. “Wherever I go, I carry a radio set and tune in to nearest stations,” he said.
