Standardised test and English proficiency for Destination US

SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, the ACT, and AP exams are the different types of tests that universities accept for undergraduate applications.

Standardised tests Continuing our discussion about the components of bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree applications for US universities, today we will talk about standardized tests and English proficiency tests.

Standardised test scores, along with high school GPA and other factors, are considered during the admission process and for decisions on scholarships for undergraduate programme applications by US universities.

The SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, the ACT, and AP exams are the different types of tests that universities accept for undergraduate applications.

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardised test required for college admission by many colleges and universities in the United States.

However, several universities accept either SAT or ACT scores and may not prefer one over the other.

Students applying to very competitive schools may need to take both SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject tests.

AP Exams and SAT subjects (when not required) are still application enhancers.

The PSAT is a practice test for SAT to help students understand their own strengths and weaknesses and experience test taking in a time-bound environment before sitting for the final SAT test.

Similar to the standardised tests, US universities and colleges may ask you to take an English language proficiency test, especially as an international student.

A high English proficiency score counts towards a strong application. Almost all institutions require either a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Pearson Test of English (PTE) score.

Standardised tests

It is very important that students check the international admissions page of each shortlisted university before registering for tests to check for application requirements.

Also, students should carefully plan test dates, as these tests are not offered throughout the calendar year.

Once the test scores have been received, official score reports should be sent through the testing agency to the universities where the student has submitted her or his applications.

We recommend students review complete details about each of the standardised and English proficiency tests from the previously published articles of this column, or reach out to EducationUSA offices for further questions.
